What is AISI 4135 Alloy Steel?
AISI 4135 is a low-alloy steel that falls under the SAE/AISI designation system for alloy steels. It is part of the 4100 series, which is characterized by the addition of chromium and molybdenum as primary alloying elements . This specific grade is widely recognized for its optimal balance of strength and ductility. In the global market, 4135 is known by several equivalents, including 35CrMo in the Chinese GB standard (GB/T 3077) and 34CrMo4 (1.7220) under the European EN standard, making it a truly international material for structural applications.
Mechanical Properties

When properly heat-treated, 4135 round bars deliver impressive mechanical performance. These properties make it suitable for components that must endure significant stress and impact. The typical mechanical specifications for the material in the quenched and tempered condition are :
Tensile Strength (σb): ≥ 985 MPa (approximately 143,000 psi)
Yield Strength (σs): ≥ 835 MPa (approximately 121,000 psi)
Elongation (δ5): ≥ 12%
Reduction of Area (ψ): ≥ 45%
Impact Toughness (Akv): ≥ 63 J
Hardness: ≤ 229 HB (as delivered, typically annealed)
Heat Treatment and Forging

To achieve its desired mechanical properties, 4135 round bars undergo specific heat treatment processes :
Annealing / Normalizing: Typically supplied in the annealed or normalized condition to improve machinability for initial processing.
Quenching: The standard hardening process involves heating to 850°C (1562°F) followed by oil cooling.
Tempering: After quenching, the steel is tempered at around 550°C (1022°F) and cooled in water or oil to relieve stresses and achieve the specified toughness and ductility.
4135 round bars are available in a variety of finishes and conditions to meet manufacturing needs, including hot-rolled, forged, cold-drawn, and bright (ground and polished) finishes . They can be supplied in diameters ranging from small bars of 5mm to large forged bars up to 1000mm or more, depending on the supplier's capabilities.
Diverse Industrial Applications

Thanks to its robust profile, AISI 4135 alloy steel is the material of choice for critical components in various sectors. Common applications include :
Automotive Industry: Crankshafts, connecting rods, steering knuckles, wheel hubs, axle shafts, and other high-load transmission parts.
Power Generation: Turbine fasteners, rotors, main spindles, and boiler support rods.
Oil & Gas and Heavy Machinery: Components for drilling equipment, heavy-duty gears, and machinery parts requiring high fatigue strength.
General Engineering: High-strength bolts, nuts, shafts, and forged components used in pressure vessels and process plants.
Key Characteristics and Properties
High Fatigue Limit and Toughness
4135 steel is renowned for its high endurance limit, making it ideal for parts subjected to cyclic loading, such as crankshafts and gear shafts. It offers a very high level of static strength and impact toughness .
Superior Hardenability
Compared to standard grades like 40Cr, 4135 offers significantly greater hardenability. This allows it to develop consistent mechanical properties throughout larger cross-sections, ensuring reliability in bigger components .
High-Temperature Strength
The molybdenum content contributes to excellent high-temperature properties. 4135 maintains high creep strength and endurance, allowing it to function effectively in environments with long-term working temperatures reaching up to 500°C (932°F) .
Fabrication Considerations
While it possesses high strength, 4135 exhibits medium plasticity during cold working. It is important to note that due to its alloy content, the weldability of 4135 is considered poor. If welding is required, special procedures such as preheating and post-weld heat treatment are necessary to prevent cracking .
