Introduction to 5120 Alloy Steel
SAE-AISI 5120 is a low-carbon, chromium-alloy steel known for its excellent toughness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength. Classified as a case-hardening (carburizing) steel, 5120 is specifically engineered to develop a hard, wear-resistant surface while maintaining a strong and ductile core. This unique combination makes it a staple material in the automotive, aerospace, and heavy machinery sectors .
The "51" series designates a chromium steel family, with the "20" representing the carbon content range (0.17–0.22%), indicating its suitability for surface hardening processes. It is typically available in the annealed condition for machinability, but it is almost always heat-treated for final applications.
Mechanical Properties

The properties listed below represent the material in its annealed state. After heat treatment (quenching and tempering), tensile strength can increase significantly, often ranging from 680–850 MPa or higher depending on the section size and processing.
Property Value (Annealed) Unit
Tensile Strength (Ultimate) :500MPa
Yield Strength (Proof) :320MPa
Elongation at Break:16%
Brinell Hardness:150 HB
Elastic (Young's) Modulus:190GPa
Density:7.8g/cm³
Heat Treatment and Forging

The true potential of 5120 round bar is unlocked through proper heat treatment. As a case-hardening grade, the primary goal is often to achieve a high surface hardness (typically 58–62 HRC) while retaining a tough core.
Forging: Initial hot working should be performed between 1200°C and 925°C (2200°F and 1700°F) .
Normalizing: Performed at 900–930°C (1650–1700°F) to refine the grain structure before machining or final treatment .
Carburizing (Case Hardening): Heated to 900–950°C (1650–1740°F) in a carbon-rich atmosphere, then oil quenched. This creates the hard outer layer .
Hardening (Core): Heated to 850–880°C (1560–1620°F) and oil quenched .
Tempering: Performed at a low temperature of 170–210°C (340–410°F) to relieve stresses after hardening without sacrificing surface hardness .
Expert Tip: For optimal machinability, 5120 steel should be machined in its normalized or annealed condition prior to the final case-hardening process. Post-treatment grinding is recommended for tight tolerances .
Diverse Industrial Applications

Due to its high fatigue resistance and ability to withstand impact, 5120 steel is the go-to material for "highly stressed" moving parts .
1. Automotive Industry
This is the most common sector for 5120 usage. It is ideal for components that require a tough core to carry a load and a hard surface to resist wear.
Gears: Transmission gears, differential gears .
Shafts: Camshafts, axle shafts, and drive pins .
Crankshafts: Used in performance and heavy-duty vehicles .
2. Industrial Machinery
The steel's torsional strength makes it suitable for power transmission.
Spindles and Couplings: Used in high-torsion environments .
Connecting Rods: For pumps and compressors .
3. Construction and Agriculture
Bushings and Pins: Used in heavy equipment linkages where oscillating motion causes wear .
Plowshares: Requires a hard surface to cut through soil .
4. General Engineering
Bearings: Low-carbon chromium bearing applications .
Tooling: Used for dies and molds where impact resistance is critical .
Available Forms and Surface Conditions
5120 steel round bars are available in a variety of conditions to suit different manufacturing needs :
Hot Rolled / Forged: Standard black surface, suitable for large parts or further machining.
Cold Drawn / Cold Finished: Offers tighter dimensional tolerances and a better surface finish for precision parts .
Peeled / Turned: The surface scale is removed, revealing a bright metal finish, ideal for critical inspections.
Polished: Mirror-like finish for aesthetic or low-friction applications .
Diameter Range: Typically available from 4 mm to 1600 mm in rounds, with lengths up to 16 meters .
