What is 5140 Steel?
5140 steel is a medium-carbon, chromium-manganese alloy steel. It is part of the AISI 5100 series of alloy steels, which are characterized by the addition of chromium to improve hardenability and strength. With a carbon content ranging from 0.38% to 0.43%, 5140 offers an optimal compromise between hardness and ductility, making it suitable for parts that undergo significant dynamic and torsional loads .
Commonly supplied as round bars, this material is typically manufactured through hot rolling, cold drawing, or forging processes to meet various application requirements.
Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of 5140 steel are significantly enhanced through heat treatment. In its Quenched and Tempered (QT) condition, 5140 round steel exhibits high tensile strength and good ductility, making it ideal for safety-critical components like bolts and shafts.
Typical mechanical values for 5140 steel in the QT condition are:
Tensile Strength (σb): ≥ 980 MPa
Yield Strength (σs): ≥ 785 MPa
Elongation (δ5): ≥ 9%
Reduction of Area (ψ): ≥ 45%
Hardness: Typically 207 HB (or 28-32 HRC after heat treatment)
Impact Value (AKV): ≥ 59 J
Heat Treatment and Forging

The true potential of 5140 steel is unlocked through heat treatment. It is highly responsive to thermal processing .
Annealing: Performed to reduce hardness and improve machinability.
Quenching and Tempering (Q&T): This is the most common treatment for 5140. The steel is heated to approximately 850°C (1560°F) and quenched in oil. It is then tempered at a high temperature (around 520°C / 968°F) to achieve the desired balance of strength and toughness . Bars processed this way are often referred to as "QT bars" .
Surface Hardening: 5140 is also suitable for nitriding and high-frequency induction hardening, which creates a very hard, wear-resistant surface while maintaining a tough core.
Diverse Industrial Applications

Thanks to its excellent fatigue resistance and torsional strength, 5140 steel is a staple in several industries.
Automotive Industry
- Gears and pinions
- Crankshafts and camshafts
- Steering knuckles
- Axles and drive shafts
- Connecting rods .
Industrial Machinery
- Machine tool spindles
- Hydraulic piston rods
- Bolts, studs, and other high-strength fasteners (Grade 8.8 / 10.9) .
- Shafts and axles for heavy equipment.
Construction & Other
- Anchor bolts and threaded rods
- Plastic molds (for medium-sized dies).
- Pump and valve components.
Why Choose 5140 for Your Project?
Choosing 5140 round steel offers several manufacturing advantages:
- Hardenability: It responds predictably to heat treatment, allowing for uniform hardness even in medium-sized cross-sections.
- Machinability: In the annealed condition, it machines relatively well, though the hard carbides mean carbide tooling is recommended for high-volume production.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to higher-alloy steels like 4140 or 4340, 5140 provides excellent mechanical properties at a competitive price point.
