What is 5132 Steel?
5132 steel belongs to the standard alloy steel group. It is often described as a through-hardening steel with a low chromium content (typically between 0.75% and 1.00%) . The "round steel" form refers to its solid, cylindrical cross-section, which is produced by hot rolling or forging. This form is the primary raw material for machining into shafts, rods, fasteners, and various other components. It is often supplied in the annealed condition for easier machining, but it is ultimately designed to be heat-treated to achieve its full mechanical potential .
Mechanical Properties
In its annealed state, 5132 round steel offers good ductility for forming. After quenching and tempering, it provides significant strength. The following are typical properties for the material in the annealed condition.
| Tensile Strength (Ultimate) | 510 | MPa (74,000 psi) |
| Tensile Strength (Yield) | 330 | MPa (48,000 psi) |
| Elongation at Break | 22 | % |
| Brinell Hardness | 150 | - |
| Elastic Modulus | 190 - 210 | GPa (27,500 - 30,500 ksi) |
| Density | 7.8 | g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³) |
| Thermal Conductivity | 49 | W/m·K |
Heat Treatment and Forging
To optimize 5132 round steel for specific applications, it undergoes various heat treatment processes :
- Soft Annealing: Performed at 680-720°C (1256-1328°F) followed by slow cooling. This process reduces internal stresses and lowers the hardness to a maximum of around 223 HB, making it ideal for machining .
- Hardening: The steel is austenitized by heating to 830-870°C (1526-1598°F) . It can then be quenched in either water or oil to achieve a martensitic structure, which significantly increases its hardness and strength .
- Tempering: After hardening, the steel is reheated to between 540-680°C (1004-1256°F) . Tempering reduces brittleness and relieves internal stresses, allowing the user to fine-tune the balance between hardness and toughness .
- Normalizing: Carried out at 850-890°C (1562-1632°F) to refine the grain structure and achieve uniformity .
Diverse Industrial Applications
Due to its medium-hardness and ability to be toughened through heat treatment, 5132 round steel is selected for components that require a combination of strength and durability. Common applications include :
- Fasteners: High-strength screws and bolts.
- Automotive Components: Steering knuckles, axles, tie rod ends, and other stressed chassis parts.
- Machine Parts: Shafts, spindles, gears, and studs that require moderate strength and good wear resistance.
Machinability and Fabrication
5132 round steel is considered to have good machinability, with a rating of approximately 77% compared to a 100% baseline (often 1212 carbon steel) . This makes it suitable for high-production machining operations.
- Turning: Recommended cutting speeds range from 285 to 390 m/min (930-1280 SFM) using appropriate carbide tooling .
- Milling: For milling operations, speeds of 180 to 240 m/min (590-790 SFM) are recommended .
- Weldability: Like most medium-carbon alloy steels, 5132 is weldable but requires preheating and post-weld heat treatment to prevent cracking in the heat-affected zone .
