What is AISI/SAE 5130?
AISI 5130 is a standard grade alloy structural steel under the SAE J1249 specification . It is often compared to the Chinese grade 30Cr and the Japanese JIS SCr430, making it a globally recognized material for manufacturing critical machinery parts.
This grade is characterized primarily by its chromium content, which hovers around the 1% mark. This addition significantly enhances the steels hardenability and corrosion resistance compared to plain carbon steels, while maintaining excellent ductility.
Mechanical Properties

When supplied in a heat-treated condition (such as quenched and tempered), 5130 round steel delivers a robust set of mechanical properties. For a standard 25mm diameter specimen, the following mechanical data is expected :
- Tensile Strength (σb): ≥ 885 MPa (megapascals)
- Yield Strength (σs): ≥ 685 MPa
- Elongation (δ5): ≥ 11%
- Reduction of Area (ψ): ≥ 45%
- Impact Toughness (Akv): ≥ 47 J (Joules)
- Hardness: ≤ 187 HB (annealed condition)
This combination of high yield strength and good elongation makes 5130 an ideal candidate for parts that require a high strength-to-weight ratio and the ability to absorb shock without fracturing.
Heat Treatment and Forging

One of the primary advantages of AISI 5130 over standard 30-carbon steel is its superior hardenability, a direct result of its chromium content .
- Critical Diameter: In oil, 5130 can fully harden through in sections up to 8–34mm thick. In water, this critical diameter increases significantly to 19–56mm .
- Forging: The recommended hot working temperature range is 1100°C to 850°C .
- Annealing: Performed to achieve a microstructure suitable for machining, resulting in a hardness of ~187 HB.
- Quenching & Tempering (Q&T): The standard Q&T process involves austenitizing at 860°C, quenching in oil, followed by tempering at 500°C (cooled in water or oil) . This cycle develops the optimal balance of strength and toughness.
Diverse Industrial Applications

The unique profile of 5130 round steel makes it indispensable in the automotive, heavy machinery, and aerospace sectors. It is specifically utilized for manufacturing components that are subject to high stress and fatigue .
Common applications include:
- Automotive Drivetrain: Gears, gear shafts, and main axles.
- Fasteners: High-strength bolts, nuts, and studs for critical connections (e.g., turbine fasteners and boiler support rods) .
- Mechanical Components: Connecting rods, torsion bars, and steering linkages.
- Hydraulic Systems: Piston rods and valve components.
- Surface Hardening: It is also an excellent candidate for induction hardening or nitriding, where a hard, wear-resistant surface is required alongside a tough core
Product Forms and Availability
AISI 5130 is a versatile grade available in various forms to suit different manufacturing processes. While commonly sought after as round bar, it is also available as :
- Round Bar: Diameters typically ranging from 5.5mm to 800mm.
- Flat Bar / Square Bar: For machining custom brackets and plates.
- Heavy Plate: For structural fabrications.
- Forged Pieces: Such as stepped shafts manufactured to OEM drawings.
Most suppliers offer cutting services (CNC saw cutting), third-party inspection (SGS, TUV, BV), and various packaging options for sea freight or air cargo to meet international shipping standards.
